Responsible for policy, planning and implementation of all activities of SUPARCO.

Space Applications & Research Center

Remote Sensing Applications Directorate

Undertakes projects relating to Remote Sensing and GIS applications, conduct of short training courses and R&D activities in the said disciplines. It has the following two divisions:

Remote Sensing and GIS Division
Conducts various projects relating to Remote Sensing and GIS applications.

Training, R&D Division
Plans and executes academic activities/short training courses on Remote Sensing & GIS, Space Sciences & Environment under the umbrella of National Center for Remote Sensing and Geoinformatics (NCRG). It also conducts R&D studies relating to Remote Sensing and GIS.

Space and Atmospheric Sciences Directorate

Space Application Div

Undertakes the following types of research projects related to space and environmental sciences and remote sensing & GIS using satellite and ground based data.

Environmental Lab
Undertakes research and projects related to space and environmental sciences using satellite and ground based data. It has the following capabilities:
  • Fixed and mobile air pollution monitoring
  • Stack emission monitoring
  • Asbestos monitoring
  • Indoor air pollution monitoring
  • Drinking water & waste water analysis
  • Air dispersion modeling
  • Meteorological parameters measurements
  • EIA / IEE studies
  • Analytical facilities for trace elements and organic compounds in Air, Water and Soil samples
Atmospheric Data Receiving & Processing Center (ADRPC)
ADRPC established at SAR Wing, Karachi, which is equipped with real time data acquisition and processing facility for Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS) onboard Aqua and Terra Satellites, Advance Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) onboard NOAA, FengYun1D, FengYun2E and Meteosat-7.
  • Snow Cover Estimation for Water Resource Management
  • Glacial Lake Outburst Flood Mapping (GLOF)
  • Natural Resource Management
  • Atmospheric Studies
  • Fog Studies
  • Natural and Industrial Hazards Monitoring and Mapping
  • NDVI as input for Crop Monitoring

Space Science Div

Undertakes research projects related to earth’s ionosphere and geomagnetism such as:

Karachi Ionospheric Station
Acquires ionospheric data for:
  • Issuance of alerts and warning for bad HF propagation conditions
  • Ionospheric data bulletins
  • MUF/ FOT predictions
  • Ionospheric research
Geomagnetic Observatory
Acquires geomagnetic data for monitoring / generating:
  • Secular variations
  • Geomagnetic parameters baselines
  • Geomagnetic storms
  • Issue warning to HF communication users
  • Local geomagnetic activity (K) index
Astronomy
Moon prediction.

National Center for Remote Sensing and Geoinformatics (NCRG)

Conducts short term training courses in various areas of remote sensing and space sciences including hands-on training on relevant software. Training themes/areas include:
  • Remote sensing & geographic information system
  • Remote sensing & digital image processing
  • Digital photogrammetry & remote sensing
  • Remote sensing and GIS applications in areas of national development
  • Climate change and natural resource management
  • Space weather monitoring
  • Environmental pollution monitoring
  • Image processing through ER-Mapper and ERDAS IMAGINE
  • Usage and applications of ArcGIS

Satellite Research & Development Center for Remote Sensing Satellite

Responsible for planning, development, production and operation of Remote Sensing Satellite. It has the following facilities:

Satellite Research & Development Center for Communication Satellite

Responsible for planning, development, production and operation of Communication Satellite. It has the following facilities:

  • Telemetry and Telecommand (TMTC) Lab
  • Telemetry, Tracking and Command (TT&C) station

Telemetry, Tracking and Command (TT&C) Facility

The TT&C station was commissioned in 1996. It was designed to interface with satellites in low earth orbit and is able to track satellites, receive telemetry signals from satellites and transmit telecommands to satellites. The system can receive telemetry and transmit telecommands in VHF, UHF and S bands.

Satellite Ground Station

Acquires, processes and disseminates remote sensing data from SPOT series of satellites and undertakes remote sensing applications projects

Ionospheric Research Station

Acquires ionospheric data for:
  • Issuance of alerts and warning for bad HF propagation conditions
  • Ionospheric data bulletins
  • MUF / FOT predictions
  • Ionospheric research

Geomagnetic Observatory

Acquires geomagnetic data

MULTAN

Space & Atmospheric Research Station

Acquires ionospheric data for:
  • Issuance of alerts and warning for bad HF propagation conditions
  • Ionospheric data bulletins

PESHAWAR

Space Application & Research Center

SUPARCO Regional Office Peshawar was established in 1985-86 in order to provide a platform for liaison and facilitation of the Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and FATA Regions with SUPARCO. Key functions of the SUPARCO Regional Office Peshawar are:
  • R&D in the field of Forestry, Geology, Mountain Agriculture, Water Resources Management and Urban Infrastructure Managemen
  • Undertakes projects relating to Remote Sensing, GIS applications and Environmental Impact Assessment
  • Provides Satellite data (0.5-20m) of SPOT 1-5 & Pleiades-I satellites and DEM (1-30m)
  • Conduct short training courses (on request) in the fields of Geoinformatics, GNSS, Database Programming and Custom GIS Applications Development
  • Provides support to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) in case of Disaster
  • Conduct joint research projects with Universities and R&D Institutions in the field of Disaster Management, Forestry, Geology, and Water Resources etc
  • Offer MS/M.Phil level Internship to the Universities students to carry out final year project in the field of Geospatial Sciences Applications
  • Promote awareness about space technologies contribution for socio-economic development of the nation among masses, students through the conduct of World Space Week (WSW) and short seminars
