Satellite Remote Sensing & GIS

 

As a national coordinator for remote sensing activities in Pakistan, SUPARCO organises short training courses on annual / biannual basis to acquaint national users with various applications of satellite remote sensing data for resource and environmental surveying. SUPARCO has provided basic training in remote sensing applications to more than 600 scientists/ engineers and other professionals from different public and private sector agencies in the country.

 

Training Course on Image Processing using ERDAS Imagine
03-07 Jan 2011, Karachi, Pakistan

.

A one week training course on Image Processing through ERDAS Imagine was organized by SUPARCO at Karachi. Six participants from government, private and defense organizations including Public Health Engineering Department attended the course.

The course aimed at providing basic concepts of image processing and extensive hands-on-experience of working on ERDAS IMAGINE Platform. A variety of image processing functions available in ERDAS IMAGINE were covered, which include, but are not limited to data extraction, image enhancements, data merging and mosaicing, classification, map composition, geo-coding and vector data handling as well as 3D tools.

 

Hands-on Training Course on ArcGIS
01-05 November 2010, Karachi, Pakistan

.

Due to its demand, the course “Hands-on training Course on ArcGIS” was repeated at NCRG, SUPARCO HQs, Karachi. Large Number of nominations were received from Overseas, local, public and private sector organizations. The course aimed at providing basic concepts of GIS with extensive hands-on-experience on ArcGIS platform. It covered a wide range of tools available through a single platform, ranging from desktop mapping to spatial analysis. It navigates through the three basic ArcGIS interfaces including Arc Catalogue, ArcMap and ArcToolbox. Additionally, the training also covered ArcScene and ArcGlobe for 3D modeling, display, and access to global views of the earth. The spatial analysis functions which infact are the core of any GIS platform were explored and used in a variety of applications. Also, 3D modeling and applications in different disciplines of operational use were discussed.

 

Training Course on Geological Applications of Remote Sensing
27 September - 01 October 2010, Karachi, Pakistan

A one-week Training Course on Geological Applications of Remote Sensing was organized by NCRG, SUPARCO at Karachi from 27 Sep - 01 Oct 2010. Fourteen participants from ISNET, public and private sector organizations including PPL and Defence attended the course. The main objective of this training course was to provide participants with the practical skills and underlying theoretical aspects that allow them to streamline the information and knowledge development process for individual projects as well as to obtain valuable insights on how to modernize geo-spatial data infrastructures in their home organizations.

 

Training Course on Remote Sensing & Digital Image Processing
05-16 July 2010, Karachi, Pakistan

.

Two weeks training course on Remote Sensing and Digital Image Processing was organized at NCRG, SUPARCO HQs, Karachi. There were 10 local and foreign participants. The course aimed at providing knowledge and skills in state-of-the-art remote sensing technologies and their applications. It also focused on concepts of digital image processing techniques and development of image processing algorithms to achieve various image processing tasks. It also attempted to explore functionalities of various off-the-shelf commercial systems and their comparisons. The course touched upon the latest developments in remote sensing both in space and ground segments.

 

On the Job Training on Programming for WEB GIS
24-28 May 2010, Karachi, Pakistan

.

A one-week “On the Job Training on Programming for Web GIS” was organised by NCRG, SUPARCO at Karachi from 24-28 May 2010. Eight participants from Govt and private organizations including PPL, Defence, UNDP etc attended the course. The objective was to impart practical knowledge of Web GIS development to individuals and professionals to enhance their skills in this growing field by familiarizing them with concepts of GIS customization and its implementation. It involved development of Graphical User Interface (GUI), integration of main GIS functionalities such as map querying, generating maps and reports based on user requirements.

 

Advanced Training Course on Remote Sensing & GIS
05-16 April 2010, Karachi, Pakistan

.

SUPARCO organized a two-week advanced training course on Remote Sensing & Geographic Information System (GIS) from 05-16 April 2010 at National Center for Remote Sensing and Geoinformatics (NCRG), SUPARCO. There were 16 participants in the course; 14 of them were from different public and private sector organizations in Pakistan as well as two participants from OIC member countries. The course was aimed at imparting knowledge and developing skills in the latest advancements in remote sensing applications through various exercises and hands-on training.

 

Hands-on Training Course on ArcGIS Software
08-12 & 15-19 February 2010, Karachi, Pakistan

.

On account of a large number of nominations received for the course titled “Hands-on Training Course on ArcGIS” Since all candidates could not be accommodated in one course, two courses were organized, the first from 08-12 Feb 2010 and the second from 15-19 Feb 2010 at NCRG, SUPARCO. Participants from different public & private sector organizations including education & defense establishments attended the course. The courses were aimed at developing understanding of ArcGIS and its components covering a wide range of tools from desktop mapping to spatial and 3-D analysis techniques available on this platform, which were used in different GIS applications through its basic interfaces including ArcMap, ArcCataloge, ArcScene, ArcGlobe, ArcReader and ArcPublisher.

 

Image Processing through ERDAS Imagine

A one week course on image processing through ERDAS Imagine was organized at NCRG, SUPARCO HQs, Karachi. Eleven participants from all over the country from public and private sector organizations attended the course. The course was aimed at providing basic concepts of image processing and hands on experience of working on ERDAS Imagine. A variety of functions and tools available with ERDAS Imagine were covered that include data extraction, image enhancement, data merging and mosaicing, classifications, map composition, virtual GIS and vector data handling.

 

On the Job Training on Database Programming for GIS Applications
05 - 09 October 2009, Karachi, Pakistan

.

This course was a replica of the course organized during 06-10 April 2009. It included topics on Geo-database design and development, spatial ware for GIS development, Programming and customizing GIS applications, Designing user interface, Data extraction, querying analysis and reporting.

 

Advanced Training Course on Remote Sensing & GIS
13 - 24 July 2009, Karachi, Pakistan

.

An advanced training course on Remote Sensing and GIS was organised at NCRG, SUPARCO HQs, Karachi. 20 participants from abroad and Pakistan from govt and private organizations including PPL, PMD, NWFP Forest Deptt etc. attended the course.

The course was aimed at providing development skills in the latest advancements in remote sensing GIS applications through various exercises and extensive hands-on training by using different Image Processing and GIS software. The participants were exposed to various functionalities available with these software tools to be used for image processing and GIS Analysis.

 

On the Job Training on GIS Development
08 - 12 June 2009, Karachi, Pakistan

Geographic Information Systems are being widely adopted by organizations and individuals to monitor and follow up their operations by gaining insights and analyzing the data with more precision and flexibility.
The objective of this course was to provide practical knowledge of GIS applications development to individuals and professionals.
It involved development of Graphical User Interface (GUI), integration of main GIS functionalities such as map querying, performing spatial analysis and generating maps and reports based on user requirements. Additionally, the course exposed the participants to the programming skills to develop customized GIS applications.

 

Short Training Course on Remote Sensing & Digital Image Processing

A two weeks short training course on Remote Sensing and Digital Image Processing was organised at NCRG, SUPARCO HQs, Karachi. There were 18 participants from Pakistan and abroad from the Govt and private organizations who attended the course.

The course was aimed to impart knowledge and development of skills in state of the art technologies of remote sensing and its applications. The topics taught include satellite remote sensing, digital image processing, GPS handling, latest development in remote sensing etc.

 

On the Job Training on Database Programming for GIS Applications
06 - 10 April 2009, Karachi, Pakistan

.

The course was designed for organizations and interested individuals who intended to augment their knowledge base by working with the professionals having hands on experience in developing customized GIS applications. It highlighted and focused all concepts and steps involved in developing GIS Applications for any specific discipline and/or user. The training also demonstrated the role of spatial ware in Geo-database development, programming, data extraction, analysis and custom built GIS application. The course comprised of Lectures as well as hands on training sessions and finally concluded with a mini GIS project.

 

Training Course on Satellite Remote Sensing for Forestry, Environment and Water Resource Applications
24 - 28 March 2009, Peshawar, Pakistan

.

SUPARCO organized one week training course on “Satellite Remote Sensing for Forestry, Environment and Water Resource Applications” at Pakistan Forest Institute (PFI), Peshawar. Eleven participants from departments attended the course.

The objective of the course was to introduce course participants with emerging technologies i.e. Remote Sensing, GPS and GIS and its use in planning and management activities in three disciplines i.e. Forestry, Environment, and Water Resources. Trainees were imparted Hands-on ER Mapper software and GPS. Different case studies were presented, demonstrated during the course.

 

Training Course on Image Processing through ER MAPPER
26 - 30 January 2009, Karachi, Pakistan

.

A two week training course on Image Processing through ER Mapper was organised by NCRG, SUPARCO HQs at Karachi. 07 participants from govt and private organizations including PPL, PMD, NWFP Forest Deptt etc. attended the course.

The course was aimed at providing basic concepts of image processing and extensive hands-on-experience on ER-Mapper Image Processing Platform. The participants were exposed to various functionalities and tools available in ER Mapper for different processing functions covering data extraction, merging, mosaicing, classification, map composition, geo-coding, gridding, 3D visualization etc. It also covered concepts relating image enhancement through contrast stretching, filter transforms etc.

 

Image Processing through ERDAS Imagine
12 - 16 January 2009, Karachi, Pakistan

One week course on Image Processing through ERDAS Imagine was organised at NCRG, SUPARCO HQs, Karachi. 20 participants from all over the country from Govt and private organizations attended the course.

The course was aimed at providing basic concepts of image processing and hands on experience of working on ERDAS Imagine. A variety of functions/tools available with ERDAS Imagine were covered that includes data extraction, image enhancement, data merging and mosaicing, classifications, map composition, virtual GIS and vector data handling.

 

Short Training Course on Emerging GIS Applications
01 - 05 September 2008, Karachi, Pakistan

SUPARCO organised a short Training Course on “Emerging GIS Applications” from 01 – 05 Sept 2008 at National Centre for Remote Sensing & Geo-Informatics (NCRG), SUPARCO, Karachi. Twenty-one participants from different national organizations attended the course. The course was targeted at those who are working in applications of GIS technologies.

The course introduced new concepts and provided knowledge on emerging applications of GIS in different discipline areas. It covered topics such as GIS platforms; System analysis for GIS development; Integrating GPS, remote sensing and GSM technologies in a GIS environment; Spatial Analysis, 2D/3D GIS applications, GIS modeling; Customized GIS applications (e.g Sales & Services; Crime Mapping, Monitoring & Management; and Tourism/Archaeology etc); GIS for Vehicle Tracking and Fleet Management; 3D Visualization using VRML; and Web based GIS. Various operationalized case studies were presented, demonstrated and discussed during the course.

 

Advanced training course on Remote Sensing & Geographic Information System
04 - 15 August 2008, Karachi, Pakistan

.

SUPARCO organized a two-week advanced training course on Remote Sensing & Geographic Information System from 04-15 August 2008 at National Center for Remote Sensing and Geoinformatics (NCRG), SUPARCO, Karachi. There were 16 participants in the course; 14 of these were from different public and private sector organisations in Pakistan and 02 were from Sudan.

The course sought to impart knowledge and develop skills in the latest advancements in remote sensing applications through various exercises and hands-on training.

The course was designed for those who are working in applications of these technologies in their relevant fields. The topics included advancement in satellite remote sensing, concepts of digital image processing, handling of GPS, latest developments in GIS analysis techniques.

 

ArcGIS Training Course
21 - 25 July 2008, Karachi, Pakistan

Due to a strong demand, the training course “Hands-on training Course on ArcGIS” was repeated 21-25 July 2008 at NCRG, SUPARCO, Karachi. Twenty participants from different educational, public and private sector organisations attended the course.

This course developed understanding of ArcGIS and its components; it covered a wide range of tools available on this platform, ranging from desktop mapping to spatial & 3-D analysis techniques which were used in different GIS applications through its basic interfaces including ArcMap, ArcCatalogue, ArcScene, ArcGlobe, ArcReader & ArcPublisher.

 

Training Course on ArcGIS
26 - 30 May 2008, Karachi, Pakistan

SUPARCO organised a hands-on training on ArcGIS from 26-30 May 2008 at SUPARCO Headquarters, Karachi. Twenty two participants from different public & private sector organisations attended the course.

Training Workshop on Satellite Technology Applications in Communication and Remote Sensing
05 - 08 May 2008, Lahore, Pakistan

SUPARCO organized a 4-days Training Workshop on Satellite Technology Applications in Communication and Remote Sensing from 5 - 8 May 2008 in Lahore. Thirty seven participants from public and private sector organizations and educational institutions in Pakistan attended the course; of these four were from OIC member countries.

.

The Workshop was aimed at highlighting the potentials of the evolving satellite technologies and their applications in the fields of communication and remote sensing. In the area of communications, it covered topics relating to trends and techniques being used in broadcasting through satellites, military applications and the role of satellites in mobile and multimedia applications as well as secure communications. The component of the workshop relating to remote sensing highlighted satellite based methodologies in crop monitoring and yield estimation, landuse and landcover mapping and monitoring.

 

Training Course on Remote Sensing & Digital Image Processing
07 – 18 April 2008, Karachi, Pakistan

.

SUPARCO organised a two-week training course on Remote Sensing & Digital Image Processing from 07-18 April 2008 at National Center for Remote Sensing and Geoinformatics (NCRG), SUPARCO Headquarters, Karachi. There were twenty participants on the course; sixteen from different public and private sector organisations in Pakistan and two each from Bangladesh and Syria.

The course sought to impart knowledge and develop skills in state-of-the-art remote sensing technologies and their applications through various exercises, case studies and hands-on training.

The course was targeted to those who are working in applications of these technologies in their relevant organizations. Topic covered included emerging trends in satellite remote sensing, concepts of digital image processing, handling of GPS, latest developments in remote sensing both in space and ground segment etc.

 

Training Course on GIS – Developers’ Perspective
17 - 21 March 2008, Karachi, Pakistan

.

SUPARCO organised a five-day training course titled GIS – Developers’ perspective from 17-21 March 2008 at National Center for Remote Sensing and Geoinformatics (NCRG), SUPARCO Headquarters, Karachi.

.

Twenty-one participants from different public and private sector organisations attended the course. Since the course was designed to develop specialized programming skills for customized GIS based solutions, a basic understanding of programming and GIS was a prerequisite.

The course included topics like mapping and GIS fundamentals, coordinates and projection systems, GIS platforms, exploring GIS software, VB.Net environment, database concepts, exploring SQL server, customizing GIS applications, mapping in VB.Net, Spatial Ware and GIS project development. MapInfo Professional was used as the GIS component for demonstrations; VB.Net was used as the programming language and SQL Server as the database for workshops and projects.

 

International Training Course on Remote Sensing & Digital Image Processing
18 – 29 December 2007, Karachi, Pakistan

.

SUPARCO organised a two week training course on Remote Sensing & Digital Image Processing from 18 – 29 December 2006 at SUPARCO Headquarters, Karachi. Twenty participants from national organisations as well as OIC member countries including two from Sudan, one from Bangladesh and one from Nigeria, attended the course. One Pakistani national studying in Germany, also attended the course.

The topics relevant to satellite remote sensing technology and its applications, digital image processing as well as available tools in handling different satellite data types and extracting information to be readily used by managers, planners and policy makers were covered. The course was targeted for those who are working in applications of these technologies in their relevant departments /companies /organizations.

 

International Training Course on Geographical Information System
22 October - 02 November 2007, Karachi, Pakistan

.

The course was aimed at imparting theoretical concepts and developing skills to build and manage spatial databases and perform spatial analysis using GIS platform. Participants were exposed to techniques in developing GIS databases, incorporation and integration of different thematic data layers and their corresponding attributes for performing spatial analysis and generating maps, reports based on user requirements. Additionally, the course imparted basic programming skills to develop customized applications as well as Internet GIS.

 

International Training Course on Photogrammetry & Remote Sensing
21 August – 01 September 2006, Karachi, Pakistan

.

SUPARCO organised a two week training course on Photogrammetry & Remote Sensing at Karachi. 17 participants from national organisations as well as OIC member countries including four from Iraq and two from Bangladesh with the financial assistance of ISNET attended the course. Three Pakistani nationals working in Saudi Arabia, also attended the course.

The topics relevant to Photogrammetry, satellite remote sensing technology, its applications as well as available tools in handling different satellite data types and extracting information to be readily used by managers, planners and policy makers were covered. The course was targeted for those who are working in applications of these technologies in their relevant departments/companies/organizations of their respective countries.

 

Training Course on Geographical Information System
13 – 24 February 2006, Karachi, Pakistan

.

SUPARCO organised a two week course on Geographical Information System was conducted at the National Centre for Remote Sensing & Geographic Information System from 13th February to 24th February 2006 at Karachi. This course was aimed at imparting theoretical concepts and developing skills to build and manage spatial databases and perform spatial analysis using GIS platform. Participants were exposed to techniques in developing GIS databases, incorporation and integration of different thematic data layers and their corresponding attributes for performing spatial analysis and generating maps, reports based on user requirements. Additionally, the course imparted basic programming skills to develop customised applications as well as Internet GIS.

 

Training Course under UNOPS Programme

.

A one-month training course was conducted on Remote Sensing and GIS under UNOPS Program. The officials from provincial irrigation departments of Sindh, Punjab and NWFP participated in the course. The aim of this training course was to introduce the role of remote sensing and GIS for management and planning of water resources.

 

Training Course on Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System for OIC Countries

.

Two training courses of one-week duration were organised by SUPARCO in collaboration with ISNET for scientist and engineers from OIC countries. The aim of these courses was to share knowledge among the OIC member countries about latest technological developments in the fields of remote sensing and GIS.
